Most questions use the same five-point scale, from Strongly disagree to Strongly agree, so answers can be compared across people and parties. A few questions in the U.S. test offer two options; choose the one closest to your view, even if neither fits perfectly.

Each statement needs a single answer to place you on the axes. Choose the option closest to what you think.

Each answer adds or subtracts points on the economic or the social axis. At the end, both totals are plotted on the compass. The percentage on each axis shows how far you are from the centre: 0% is the centre and 100% is the edge.

Each question compares your answer with the positions of the Democratic and Republican parties. Your result shows which party you lean towards, how often you agree with each one and how many of your answers side with the other party.

In the U.S. test, your agreement with each party is calculated separately. Neutral answers don’t count for either party, so the two percentages don’t have to add up to 100%.

The test does not send your answers to our server. Your progress is saved only in your browser, so you can pick up where you left off if you close the page, and it is deleted automatically after 30 days. Clearing your browser data also removes it.
